We are seeking a Studio Production Technician who can throw on the wheel and and make ceramic objects using a variety of earthenware and stoneware clay bodies and ceramic processes. This role contributes technical production capability in our design and ceramics studio  in Reservoir, Victoria

This position will commence as a casual contract, initially up to 3 days per week.

The position offers the opportunity to work on a variety of tasks that include -

  • Preparing and measuring clay accurately, ready for use in throwing, slab, hand building and extrusion techniques. 
  • Throwing reproducible forms on the wheel, with an eye for quality and detail using earthenware and stoneware clay bodies (< 7kg clay).
  • Turning clay objects and managing the drying process to preserve object integrity.
  • Updating work orders based on daily progress and achievements.
  • Coordinating object movements through the ceramics process to meet set timelines and project goals.
  • Supporting the production studio workflows by reclaiming clay for wheel throwing and construction.
  • Conducting glaze mixing from studio recipes and testing samples, glazing objects using various surface application techniques and fettling ready for firing.
  • Safe handling of raw clay, studio equipment and glaze materials.
  • Safely loading and unloading electric kilns, ensuring the proper refractory is used and taking care with objects.
  • Completes and maintains studio administration as needed to support operations.
  • Ability to cooperatively follow specific instructions, studio processes and procedures.
  • Provide courteous and professional service to all suppliers, visitors and stockists.
  • Other duties as assigned that contribute to the day to day operations of the production team and studio.
  • Maintains a proactive approach to OH&S in the workplace ensuring the studio and equipment is maintained, kept clean, organised, safe and easily accessible.


To be considered for this role you
must demonstrate -


  • Relevant education qualifications or equivalent work experience in ceramics, design or visual art.
  • Has a feeling for clay and a sound understanding of the ceramics process and production techniques.
  • Have command over the form on the wheel. 
  • Previous experience production throwing or assisting in a sculptural studio is highly regarded.
  • Strong verbal, written, numeracy and communication skills.
  • Problem solving and decision making skills.
  • Reliability and organisational skills.
  • Has dexterity and high attention to detail.
  • Work effectively both within a team environment and autonomously.
  • A current Victorian Driver’s License.
