CLAY MASTERCLASS - FLATWARE
An inspiring, demonstration based workshop with
Master Potter, Michael Skewes
Michael Skewes is a highly respected and experienced potter and educator. He designs and creates handmade ceramics, architectural pieces and bespoke dinnerware from his tranquil bushland studio, Michael Skewes Pottery in Melbourne, Australia.
With over 30 years’ experience, Michael continues to be challenged by clay as an expressive material. He makes highly resolved forms that are consistent with his intentions and that communicate on sensory and technical levels. This is an authentic opportunity to learn from and see one of Australia’s most experienced potters in action on the wheel.
In this inspiring class, Michael will share his professional knowledge in production pottery and offer advice on producing consistent flatware across a range of sizes and thicknesses, from small plates to the very large. You will see Michael demonstrate how to plan, set up, throw and trim symmetrical, asymmetrical and altered flatware on the wheel. He will demonstrate repetition throwing to produce a consistent flatware series. Michael will discuss and demonstrate approaches to glazing and firing considerations. Common clay missteps will be explored as avenues for enriching the knowledge exchange.
