Surface Commissions
Anchor has produced custom ceramic surfaces through a direct commissioning model. This model helped support greater expression in the design phase of a project, and allowed for one-off, bespoke and project specific solutions.
Surfaces were designed and produced under the direction of Anchor’s Creative Director Bruce Rowe and undertaken in consultation with architects or designers, often from the earliest design stages of a project. We would then work with design teams to design, develop and realise a custom ceramic surface, which would be tested in-house before going through surface and glaze sample development.
Each stage of the process was undertaken by hand. Clay was rolled, cut, stacked, loaded, glazed, and fired through an intensive making process.
Commissions undertaken ranged from very small-scale projects through to larger scale and were both public and private projects. The studio worked on a very limited number of projects at any one time and produced high quality, handmade ceramic surfaces through a design-based framework. The commissioning model was sunsetted in 2020.
